What is Adventure?

I’ve been asking my students what they think adventure means. They’ve done a good job summing up what it’s all about. As their teacher I will admit I’m a little impartial.

One answer captured the big picture of adventure for me…
“Adventures are journeys with a message. You learn something.”
I think this parallels with the whole ‘life is an adventure’ idea. A lot of times I get caught up in thinking I need to pack my bags and move to a new state, or travel to a country I’ve never been to before. I get stir crazy if I’m in one place for a long time. Being in Knoxville for four years has had its share of moments where I’ve been itching to get out and go somewhere new, but I’ve learned there’s a lot to be said for staying put for a while. The majority of my students’ answers reminded me that adventure does not have to include buying a plane ticket or packing everything up and leaving.
“An adventure is exploring places you’ve never been before.”
“Doing stupid things and being alive to tell the tale”
“Leaving your comfort zone to try something new”
“Adventure is curiosity. Going somewhere you’ve never been before. Exploring something new.
“Doing something fun.”
“My adventure would be riding through trails on my dirt bike.”
“I love adventure! It’s my favorite word! I can have an adventure anywhere! You make adventure. Wal-Mart can be an adventure for me!”
The majority of the responses reflected the fact that we can find adventure simply in our experiences. Exploring places you’ve never been doesn’t have to be a new country. It could be a new local trail or hangout spot. Leaving your comfort zone could be introducing yourself to someone or trying to learn a new skill.
I think it’s important to celebrate our daily adventures  and I need to remind myself often what adventure is. My principal said that adventure to her is her job. I love being a teacher and sometimes forget that I have adventures all the time. I get to have different interactions with students, hear new stories, laugh, and of course grow every day because I’m learning every day. Learning is an adventure in itself.
Adventure and exploration is what we make it to be. It can be making new friends, going on a bike ride, or exploring the aisles of Wal-Mart. We just have to remember to recognize and celebrate it.
Choose Adventure. Always move forward.
